Gretton Past and Present

Gretton Band

The Gretton Band, in 1898

The Gretton Band was formed in 1877 as a Drum and Fife Band. It later developed into a Brass Band which won many competitions under the leadership of Thomas Spendlove, a village shoemaker.

The band has now become a Silver Band and has a thriving youth section where both boys and girls are taught to play a variety of instruments. They regularly play at events in Gretton and the surrounding area, and a highlight of the year is the tour of the village at Christmas.

In 1988 the band celebrated 111 years of existence by undertaking a marathon tour over one weekend. Every town and village at which the band had played during those 111 years was visited. A total of 55 locations. The photograph below shows Norah Wilson, Vice Chairman of Gretton Parish Council, welcoming the band back after their weekend tour.
