Gretton Past and Present

The Stocks and Whipping Post

The above photograph shows the stocks and whipping post on the village green at about the turn of the century.

The building with the frontage of banded ironstone was a butcher's shop which had its own slaughterhouse at the rear. The building on the right was Gretton Stores run by a Mr Peggs, who is probably standing in the doorway. It is said that he sold everything from cheese to paraffin.

The stocks and whipping post, pictured below in 1999, have recently been restored and are now protected by an iron fence.
